As hard as it may seem, in the Alt Camp we also have a piece of the mountains of Montserrat! It is the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Montserrat, in Montferri, a small modernist gem in honor of the patron saint of Catalonia: the Moreneta.
To learn about the history of this building we have to go back to the beginning of the 20th century. Until then, it was a tradition in Montferri and the towns of the region to make a pilgrimage to the mountains of Montserrat after the grape harvest, as a sign of gratitude for the fruits. However, such was the devotion of the people of Montferri that, one day, a resident of the town decided that the Virgin should have her own sanctuary in the town.
The commission came to the hands of Josep Maria Jujol, a close collaborator of Antoni Gaudí who designed it. As expected, that building would become a modernist bastion in the region, with parabolic arches, conglomerates, doors and wrought iron railings… Although the most authentic detail are the stone columns that emulate the Montserrat mountains on the outside of the temple. You will hardly be able to look up without being left with your mouth opened!
The works on the sanctuary were carried out by the same neighbors, who also played a key role in finding financing. The monument is the fruit of the efforts of the inhabitants of Montferri, and this is one of the facts that makes it unique.
Surrounded by vineyards, the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Montserrat in Montferri is one of the great essentials in the region. A space that enchants seen from the outside and seen from the inside, a colorful space with all kinds of shapes.
A religious temple completely different from those we are used to seeing that we really recommend visiting! You can’t miss it!
