Querol is the essence of the mountain and the lands of the Gaià del Alt Camp. Visit the Romanesque church of Santa Maria (12th century), located on the highest part of the hill around which Querol old town extends, where you will also find the cemetery, notable for its funerary stelae. Then go on foot and contemplate the magnificent views of the lands bathed by the Gaià river.
In Querol, the Castle (BCIN) is also notable. In 1835, during the first Carlist War, a party of liberals damaged it. Work is currently being carried out to consolidate the walls and vaults that were preserved. The north tower from the 10th century is notable for being built with the opus spicatum technique.
The municipality also has other castles, such as the one in Pinyana, from 986, and in Saburella, to the right of the Gaià river, privately owned, and built between 1193 and 1229.
The church of Sant Jaume de Montagut (BCIN), just off the hill of the same name, is one of the best-preserved medieval places of worship in Alt Camp. The portal is typically Romanesque, with a semicircular archivolt; the interior, on the other hand, is Gothic and large and spacious. The visit is well worth a trip from Querol.
Next to Sant Jaume is the conical summit of Montagut, with a spectacular view of a large part of Catalunya. Here, you will find some landscape tables to help you identify many of the landmarks.
The municipality of Querol has several other towns, notable among which is Esblada, with a beautiful Romanesque church dedicated to Saint James; Bonany, with the Holm oak of the Casa Gran, a monumental tree close to the town; and Valldossera, where you’ll find the baroque church of Santa Maria de Valldossera, from 1685, in the middle of a beautiful spot. It was built on an earlier one, belonging to Santes Creus, which was mentioned in the 12th century. In the spring there is a well-attended pilgrimage from inhabitants in the surroundings.
The Gorg Negre on the Gaià river is the destination of one of the most recommended trips that can be made from Querol. It goes along a path that leaves the town itself. In addition, nature lovers can also visit the Hort de les Salamandres, a natural conservation area for this native amphibian.
