For hikers who enjoy more strenuous climbs and descents and for mountain lovers, Alt Camp also has a lot to offer! Part of our territory is part of the Prades Mountains massif, specifically the villages of Alcover, Mont-ral and La Riba. This opens up our region to a whole series of routes that allow us to discover an incomparable natural environment that aspires to be declared a Natural Park.
According to various studies, the Prades Mountains were formed around 200 million years ago (to give you an idea, the Pyrenees emerged “only” thirty million years ago!), rising from the inland sea that surrounded them, the Tethys Sea. Alt Camp, like the other regions with which we share this natural space (Baix Camp, Conca de Barberà, Priorat and Les Garrigues), were covered by this sea. For this reason, the area also has important geological interest.
The Francolí, the other major river (in addition to the Gaià) that crosses the region, originates from the mountain range; and its tributaries: the Brugent and the Glorieta. The result is a relief full of torrents, canals, water passages and pools that dress the mountain and delight hikers, such as the Niu de l’Àliga, one of the great natural wonders of the Alt Camp. The Prades mountains are also a place highly valued by climbers and canyoners.
The fauna is diverse with birds such as the golden eagle or the water blackbird, and mammals such as the wild boar or the roe deer.
The cultural heritage of the area is also very extensive, which is why we recommend visiting the Remei chapel and the Paper Mill Interpretation Center (MiMo) in Alcover, the Molí del Racó in la Riba, and the town of Farena (Mont-ral), a postcard-perfect village that represents one of the hidden gems of the region.
If you like adventure, but are also curious, there is a place for you in the Prades mountains!
